His batting technique and a calm nature reminds many of Rahul Dravid. One of the most dependable cricketers in the current Indian team, AjinkyaRahane is not just a technically sound batsman but also one of the most athletic fieldersof the current Indian Team. He is the vice-captain of the Test squad and will be captaining team India in the upcoming One-off Test against Afghanistan.

Ajinkya is a shy, simple and very down to earth individual who is always open to new ideas. In the dressing room he is fondly called as Jinks or Ajju. As he celebrates his 30th Birthday today (June 6), here’s a glimpse of his journey along with some interesting facts you would love to know. Take a look!

On June 6th, AjinkyaRahane was born in AshwiKhurd, a village in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra in 1988.

Rahane’s father introduced him to cricket and used to take him for small coaching camps in Dombivli, Mumbai. Here Rahane played on a matting wicket. Ajinkya comes from a very humble family. His mother used to walk 2kms everyday carrying Ajju’s kitbag in one hand and his younger brother in another for him to attend the practice sessions.

Ajinkya Rahane is a black-belt in Karate and believes that karate helps him to keep a calm head during difficulties or challenging situations on field. Jinx has also represented a number of Indian Junior cricket teams during his early days. He played his U-15 in 2002 along with Piyush Chawla and in 2007 he played for India U19 along with likes of ViratKohli, Ishant Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja.

The right-handed batsman made an exceptional first-class debut where he represented Mumbai against Karachi Urban at Karachi for the Mohammad Nissar Trophy in 2007. Rahane opened the innings and scored an impressive 143 runs in the first innings.

One of the interesting facts about Ajinkya is he has batted at different positions in all the 3 formats of the game as per the requirements of the team. This shows the adaptability in him. The right-hand batsman is also known as a “Test-match Specialist” as his performance in India as well as overseas has been remarkable and consistent.

Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar broke Ajinkya’s record of highest individual score by an Indian in List A cricket. This happened in 2008 at the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Rahane surpassed Tendulkar’s 186 runs by scoring 187 runs to become the highest scorer in List a cricket. But in 2010, the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar not just broke AjinkyaRahane’s record but also became first Indian batsman to score double hundred in List A career.

Ajinkya credits his coach Pravin Amre for his for his technicality of batting. Amre has been instrumental in Rahane’s career as he helped him develop strong basics of batting from the young early days of his career. Jinks proved his mettle in a Ranji Trophy season wherein he led Mumbai to their 38th title win. He scored a total of 1089 runs pretty enough to impress the national selectors.

Ajinkya is a devotee of Shirdi Sai Baba and Lalbaugcha Raja. His favourite cricketers are Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar.

Ajju is often referred as ‘Mr Dependent’ and he has also proved his worth not only as a good batsman but also as one of the best fielders in the side. During a Test match in 2015 against Sri Lanka Rahane broke the record of most catches in a test match by taking 8 catches in that match.

The 30 years-old right handed batsman is the 5th Indian to score centuries in both the innings of a Test match. This happened in 2015 when India played against South Africa at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, Delhi. He is fifth Indian batsman to do so after ViratKohli, Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar and Vijay Hazare.

One of Rahane’s most vital knock is that at Lords where he scored a century to help his team win a Test at Lords after 28 years. He hit 103 runs in the first innings.

Ajinkya is married to his childhood friend Radhika Dhopavkar on 26th September 2014. Radhika is often spotted in stadiums supporting her husband in almost all his matches, be that IPL or International. The two are crazily in love with each other and make a wonderful partnership off the field!
